Social Work Placements

As part of your degree course, you will undertake two placements, providing real-life work and statutory experience in a Local Authority setting, integrating your study with professional experience.

These will be hosted by either Leeds City Council or Wakefield Council, one of 70 days and one of 100 days.

Your placements will provide you with essential knowledge and experience and develop your practical skills in Social Work in related settings, supporting diverse groups of people.

You will be supported by a highly skilled, qualified Practice Educator who will mentor, support and assess you during your placement. All of our Practice Educators are practicing Social Workers who can offer a wealth of experience to challenge and develop you whilst on placement.

We also have 24 Practice Champions across the partnership who provide high quality support, development and advice.

Successful completion of the course will enable you to apply for registration to practice with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). This registration is necessary to practice as a Social Worker in England.

With your theoretical knowledge combined with your placement experience gained at university, you will be qualified as a Social Worker and able to seek employment immediately, as an NQSW in an Assessed and Supported Year in Employment (ASYE).

“My placement was extremely varied and I had opportunities to work with a variety of service users and organisations.  I had a variety of learning opportunities such as attending court, Initial child protection reviews and development days, and training.

My practice educator understood my learning needs and ensured that I was continually challenging myself and building on my skills and knowledge.  I now have a job in the same team, and I feel that my placement prepared me perfectly for the Social Work role.”
